ma birfday.

ONE QUARTER OF A CENTURY. Wow.

Cinco de Mayo started out a tad bit disappointing, to be honest. I had a hunch, having followed the weather all week, that it was going to rain on my birthday. I did not, however, realize just how cold it was supposed to be and just how much it would rain and that said rain would continue almost without a break all day! Let me set the stage for you: usually the weather is absolutely gorgeous on my birthday. There are lots of flowers involved and sunshine and warm weather and outside and springy clothing and sandals. This year there was rain and large gusts of wind and jackets and boots and wool socks.

BUT! (And this is a big but … har har har.) It was a truly wonderful birthday!

Rubbish weather

The day started out with some quintessential music. Followed by the crepe-master in his element! Scott has really become quite the pro. We had delicious crepes with nutella, raspberries, mango, and powdered sugar. Perfection!

After a gloriously lazy afternoon we headed downtown for some more celebrating! Had dinner at Mamacitas and a little party at the French Broad Chocolate Lounge. Thanks to all my friends who came to help me celebrate and brought fun games to play! It was so much fun to relax and hang out with everyone.

And of course, thanks to this handsome guy for making me feel so special and for lighting so many birthday candles! You are my favorite and I am so lucky to be with you! Thanks for everything you do!

P.S. Thanks for the love from all around the country! I loved getting to chat with everyone who called. Long-distance love!

Spring Break 2013: The Week in Review.

This week was so busy! It was good busy, though. Mostly. I sort of wish I had a week to run around and get stuff done and another week to sleep and sit around and perhaps go to a vacation-y spot. Alas, I managed to cram it all into one ten day span! And there are still a couple more days!

Monday I went to the dentist. Clean teeth: check. And I went grocery shopping. Tuesday I went to the eye doctor and got my haircut. Healthy eyes: check. New purple glasses: check. Hair trimmy-trim: check. Scott has been in various states of an ear infection all week – pain, fever, vertigo. Stinky stinky stinky.

Wednesday morning I hit the road to Chapel Hill! Had lunch with my oldest friend, Emily Silva, before she moves to NYC next weekend! Go Emily go! Went to Trader Joe’s to stock up – one day the Asheville store will open! Thursday I spent the day with my mom in her classroom. Her kids had a really neat Poetry Coffeehouse in the morning where they read some of their original poems! I had lunch with my dad at Merritt’s Store and Grill – really terrific BLT – and had a nice time catching up with him. After school was over Mom and I spent some time going around her house and making a list of things I want to have from her house while she’s in Kuwait. Among various other conversations and general hanging out! It was a very brief visit, but lovely. Thursday evening I headed back home to the mountains!

Friday ended up being a general catch-up day. Laundry, some errands, picked up my new glasses (!!!), lovely relaxing, hanging out. Saturday I worked at my weekend job again and Mom came up for the weekend! Easter Sunday we had a nice brunch – pancakes and bacon. Mom and I borrowed our friends sweet pooch, Cricket, for an afternoon walk and had a lovely time! Then we spent the evening in and cooked a nice simple Easter dinner of ham, roasted potatoes with cheese, and green beans. We watched a fair bit of Downton Abbey and hit the sack! Monday brought another fun day of running around. A lazy morning, late brunch, an early afternoon visit to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge, a walk down to the Screen Door (where I found an awesome little children’s size ironing board that I intend to use for plants), a visit to the Biltmore for their wine tasting, and another delicious dinner together! Followed by some more Downton Abbey!

It was a lot of mish mash and this that and the other thing this Spring Break. Today was glorious! It snowed some earlier this Spring Break and we have had some lovely weather mixed in, with some rain too. The weather has been up and down and all around this spring. One day it will be consistently warm though! I was very productive this break, I got to travel, and I got to spend time with some of my favorite people! Scott is finally starting to feel a bit more like himself, which is such a relief. He still has some vertigo, but he was able to come with us to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge earlier! And I am very glad because it is our six year anniversary today!!! All in all it was a great break, a much needed rest, a rejuvenating time off, and a good week mixed with some productivity!

Fun things happening around here! Spring is in the air!

We have been going for walks at the Biltmore a lot lately. The weather over these past few weekends has been absolutely gorgeous! Oh, and the cows. Love the cows!

Finally went to The Hop for the first time! I had Sweet Beet – beet ice cream! And it was delicious!!! I never would have thought of something like that, and I love it! Especially in a waffle cone with tiny chocolate chips. Omnom!

We had our favorite pooch for a few days last week! Her humans went out of town and we had the pleasure of hosting her at our place! Such a sweetheart. Love you Cricket!

On Thursday evening we went to the Thirsty Monk for the Mystery Brewing event! Had a flight of four of their delicious beers. It was a fun evening out! If you get the chance, check out Mystery Brewing Company at the Thirsty Monk! Excellent brews!

Oh, and this is what is growing in our garden!!! We planted some bulbs in the fall and they are starting to bloom! I am positively thrilled! Makes me really happy!

Lately things have been good! The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and our flowers are blooming!

Weekend Review: Dun Dunnunah!

Samantha came to visit this weekend! It was awesome. We hit up some of our favorite Asheville spots and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves along the way. And there were snow flurries in the air pretty much the entirety of the weekend, which made it all feel very picturesque and dreamy.

We headed to Asheville Brewing Co. upon Sam’s arrival Friday evening for some delicious Tropicale pizza (with ham, bacon, and pineapple) and Rocket Girl ale to welcome her for the weekend. It totally hit the Friday-night welcome-to-the-weekend spot. Then we proceeded to return to the apartment and veg for the rest of the evening and then went to bed. It was a pretty lazy Friday evening if I do say so myself, but my-oh-my was it awesome!

Saturday morning welcomed us after late-sleeping. There was coffee and tea, sitting around and chatting while Scott was off at a meeting, bacon and pancakes for brunch, and some more chatting. Then we all bundled up and headed downtown to mosey around in the flurries for a bit. Poked around in some of our favorite shops, visited the French Broad Chocolate Lounge for some mid-afternoon indulgence, and poked around some more. After swinging by the apartment we bundled back up and went to the Biltmore for a wine tasting! It was an afternoon of true decadence. We followed up with some more wine, dinner in, and many rounds of Bananagrams.

Sunday morning (I’m noticing a theme with this weekend) we bundled back up and went to Sunny Point Cafe and stood in the flurries while we waited for a table for brunch. It was cold, but it was oh so worth it! Brunch was scrumptious and it was so nice to be warm inside and watch the flurries outside!

A wonderful weekend was had by all. Thanks for coming to visit Samantha! We had such a great time! Miss you already!

A Recap.

It.

Has been a loooooong time since I wrote a proper post.

I’m not even really sure what a “proper post” is at this point. So I am not going to dwell on it, and instead I plan to update and move on from here. The end of the year is a crazy busy time for my family. The last month-ish has been an absolute blur. Like when cars goes by in movies in fast forward and all you see is a blur of the headlights. That kind of blur. Kind of smudgy and very colorful. School has been awesome! I still love my job. I suppose this is a good time to start reflecting on the first half of the year! I have learned so much, been challenged in more ways than I knew possible, learned new ways of speaking, learned lyrics to songs that I am almost positive were made up on a whim to work with small children, been sat on, sneezed on, coughed on, and farted on, comforted many tearful tots, taught many lessons, reminded countless children to make lots of bubbles when washing hands, read a zillion stories, cried many tears about the loss of the children and teachers in Connecticut, and my heart is so full of love I hardly know what to do with myself. Being surrounded by young children all week every week is pretty much the best thing. As far as I am concerned. It is certainly not for everyone, but it is definitely for me! I am very much looking forward to having two weeks off to reflect, relax, and rejuvenate, but I will miss all the hugs and love I get every day at school!

Being a teacher brings to the forefront of my mind the tragedy in Connecticut. I am heartbroken and it makes me feel very sad every time I think about the families of everyone who was killed who are going on with life at what is supposed to be such a joyous time of year. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected.

Here are some photos of my life lately! In all the craziness that is the end of the year!

And now I sit here, post yoga, with a glass of wine. It is finally sinking in that it is Christmas break! Tomorrow promises to be a very busy day, as do the next several days, but it also promises to be super fun!!! I will try to keep this more posted!

In which my cousin came to Asheville!

I received a surprise Facebook message from my cousin, Danica, on Sunday that she was on her way through Asheville on a gigantanormous road trip! So obviously I was so excited to get together!!!

We had a marvelous time eating dinner at Tupelo Honey Cafe, and we talked and talked and talked. We strategically saved room for dessert by taking home leftovers and headed to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge! And we continued to talk and talk and talk. And it was wonderful! Before we headed out we asked the nice man sitting near us to take some pictures of us. He was gracious and patient and funny and he took some great pictures!!! Yay!

Had so much fun together Danica! I’m so glad you made this a stop on your road trip! Thanks for everything!

Scott’s Birthday: Part 1

Scott’s birthday was over a week ago! October 12th we celebrated his birth! And I, for one, am so glad he is here! We went to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge for a little celebration. He got his birthday truffle and a candle in his Highland Mocha Stout Cake!

He is gentle and kind and wise. He is funny and silly and listens to all the right kinds of music. I could go on and on, but really all it boils down to is that I am so glad to be celebrating such a wonderful person! Cheers, Scott! I love you so much!

Weekend Review: Karl and Janet’s Visit

Phew! We have entered “that time of year” where work gets busier, tourists flock from near and far, the mountains are gorgeous, and all of our friends and family come to visit!

So far my Dad and Dean came, my Mom came the first weekend of October, and Scott’s parents came last weekend! And now I am sitting here in our almost-too-quiet apartment listening to the refrigerator hum, catching up on some much-needed blogging!

Scott’s parents, Karl and Janet, arrived on a Thursday and they greeted me with open arms when I got home from work that day! What a great way to be welcomed to your home! The weekend was another whirlwind and it was so fun! We ate out at most of our favorite restaurants, saw most of our favorite things, went to the Biltmore wine tasting, and even made a day trip to Boone! I lost count of how many times we went to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge (I think it was twice, but it felt like a bazillion). And we celebrated my sweetheart’s birthday!!! It was last Friday, October 12, and I didn’t even post about it yet. (Oy vey, I am so behind it’s a little embarrassing.) Here are some pictures of our weekend with Karl and Janet! Some waiting for dinner at Tupelo Honey Cafe, some fall colors behind the Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, dessert at the French Broad Chocolate Lounge for Scott’s birthday, and a neat old truck we found while wandering around Black Mountain!

Thanks for such a great weekend!!!

A Whirlwind

Last weekend (the first weekend of October) was such a whirlwind that I have yet to write about it. Here goes! My mom arrived on Friday evening and we spent some time catching up. Then I worked all day on Saturday, followed by delicious homemade tacos for my mom’s belated birthday dinner, and a surprise visit to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge where we met up with some friends for dessert! It was so much fun to spend some time together, have a belated birthday celebration for my mom, and chocolate is always a good idea!

My mom baked some pumpkin bread on Saturday while I was at work, and on Sunday morning we made it into French Toast! We experienced this delicacy at Sunny Point Cafe, once upon a time, and have recreated it a couple of times since. It was super tasty! And it was so nice to sit and have a lovely brunch together.

After brunch we reunited with my mom’s friend (they drove up together) and went to see my school. It’s so fun showing fellow teachers (and more importantly, mom and her friend) my classroom and telling them about it! As brief as the visit was, it was absolutely marvelous to spend some time with my mom! I went to work on Sunday afternoon and my mom and her friend headed back home. Thanks for coming to visit Mom!!! Miss you already!

Sometimes You Just …

… gotta run out to the grocery store at 8:00 mid-brownie-baking because you ran out of sugar! Yep. We sure did! And I giggled the WHOLE ENTIRE TIME. And Scott said maybe we should go grocery shopping at night more often if it’s so fun! But it would totally lose its charm if it wasn’t a rarity. Especially if it wasn’t to get sugar for brownies. So we agreed that it should probably be saved for special occasions.

In other not-so-pressing-news this week has been just fine. It’s been cooler, which I love! And I’ve worn scarves almost every day this week! So that’s fun. Fall is the best! In Kindergarten earlier this week we took the kids outside to find leaves and other fun textures to make rubbings. The kids loved it! Oh, and Scott bought some peaches when he went to the store earlier this week and they were absolutely delicious!!!

I’ve been re-reading my way through the Hunger Games series. Yes, I know. I read the series a couple of years ago and am slowly reading it again. And I’m on the third book! And it’s grabbed me again! Sucked me in! Sometimes I just love a book that sucks me in and is so easy to get lost in.

And it’s almost sock-knitting weather, so that’s exciting. More importantly it’s almost sock-WEARING weather! Which I also love. I have so many stripey socks that have been waiting for me in my drawer! Mmmm socks.

Oh, and since I’m on a roll with things that make me happy – TOMORROW IS FRIDAY!!! I love Friday. Even though I have to work on Saturday. Friday just feels so good!

On that note, I’m signing out. My brownies are almost done baking!
